Max, a blind writer plagued by unsettling dreams, rents a house with open doors, living there with Helena, his wife—his emotional and physical support, his lifeblood. They are visited by Pepe, a disabled man who is a close friend of both and a habitual drinker. Together, they dream of the imminent arrival of Claudinita, the couple’s daughter and Pepe’s best friend. They read her letters and mourn her absence. Donato, an unscrupulous executive, appears on the scene, intent on profiting from the sale of the house and the kidnapping of Claudinita. The poetic, intimate, and complex atmosphere in which the first three characters move is immediately shattered by the untimely presence of a morally ruthless individual to whom they are unwilling to make any concessions.
